Could we upgrade the forum to Discourse?

MyBB is over a decade old at this point and it looks super out of date.  Discourse is much more modern and has nice features for the current Web.  I think it would attract new users who would appreciate the fresh design.

I also appreciate that you took the time to make this suggestion, but I doubt that I'll be changing the forum.

Your suggestion centers around the fact that MyBB looks dated, which can very easily be changed by writing a new CSS design.

While Discourse is very flashy and contemporary, it has a lot of things that I don't really like and might end up becoming dated themselves. The development team seems to have a real hardon for email to the point that they prevent the forum from even being installed without working email. Sending out massive amounts of email is going to annoy users and seems completely pointless.

If I were to migrate, I suppose that I'd make the current forum read only, but I'd also need a way to migrate over user accounts or else we'd probably lose a lot of users.

Discourse seems like a gimmick designed after Stack Exchange and I just don't think it would be worth trying to migrate.
