Why is Tanya so lenient on people who should be banned? - Vasily_1942 - 05-25-2024 September 4th, 2012 I've seen users say the most vile things to her and her response is to issue a severe warning level and then ban them for only a few months or a year. It seems way more then fair considering the types of things I've seen. This isn't to say that the mods don't keep order because things are usually very civil. I'm not questioning her decision either. It just seems incredibly lenient. RE: Why is Tanya so lenient on people who should be banned? - Vanya - 05-26-2024 September 4th, 2012 It's part of how she acts and it's also part of her moderation style. When it comes to wanting to avoid people, she goes from 0 to 60 incredibly fast. She will put up with someone and go out of her way to help them, but the moment she feels like they're a shithead, she completely flips. She also doesn't care that much about online negativity as long if it doesn't feel like intentional and personal maliciousness. If someone shows up and talks shit, she probably doesn't get mad until after they become a serious pain in having to deal with. She should weigh in on whether or not she agrees with this assessment. The other reason for it is she instructed the moderators to be extremely patient with users before handing out bans so users can correct themselves before they start getting kicked out of the forum. We have the warning system where users get formal warnings for rule violations and it takes a minimum of 3-6 warnings before bans of increasing frequency start. I believe it's one of the reasons why we were able to attract users and grow. Moderation still occurred because rulebreakers got warnings. Tanya also enforces a strict policy of assuming good faith until proven otherwise and she is usually extremely patient with people unless they show that they simply don't care and they're willing to game the system because they know there isn't going to be a severe punishment. There's also a huge difference between what she tolerates being directed at her and what she's going to tolerate being directed at someone else. The latter is more likely to cause a severe response. RE: Why is Tanya so lenient on people who should be banned? - Tanya - 05-28-2024 September 6th, 2012 Weird psychoanalysis aside, one of the reasons I try to be extremely patient with users who would likely be tossed out the door anywhere else is because we can help them change their bad ideas by keeping with us. Of course that means keeping order within the forum and handing out warnings and bans of necessary duration to make it clear that misbehavior isn't going to be tolerated. |
